Map Butterfly caterpillars, Araschnia levana. Newly emerged Map Butterfly. First generation. Butterfly has two broods per season. First brood has orange upper wings with dark markings and the second brood is dark and marked similar to a White Admiral. Host plant is stinging nettles, Urtica. The butterfly lays eggs on the underside of the leaves where they later emerge as black caterpillars with silvery spots.
