Lyndon B Johnson, 36th President of the United States, 1963-1969. Vice-President to John F Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson succeeded Kennedy after the President was assassinated in November 1963. He won the 1964 presidential election in a landslide, embarking on an ambitious raft of domestic social reforms known as the Great Society programme. Johnson's popularity declined from 1966 onwards as the US became increasingly embroiled in the Vietnam War, and as the 1968 presidential election approached he announced he would not seek another term as it became clear he was unlikely to receive the Democratic Party's nomination.
