White Tower within the Inner Ward of the Tower of London partially obscured by outer region structures. White Tower dates from 1078 when the castle was built by William the Conquerer. The Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. At its core is the inner ward. The Tower of London has served as royal residence and for many of its years also as a prison (as late as 1952). Its historic impact is highly significant as London grew up around it. The general layout established in the 13th century largely remains.
