Leslie Gulch Road winds through the rugged volcanic landscape of the Leslie Gulch Area of Critical Environmental Concern in southeastern Oregon. The road passes through spectacular formations of Leslie Gulch Tuff, the consolidated volcanic ash produced by a massive rhyolitic eruption approximately 15.5–15.8 million years ago. The formations seen here are part of an enormous mid-Miocene caldera system, historically interpreted as the Mahogany Mountain Caldera and more recently interpreted by some researchers as part of the much larger Rooster Comb Caldera. Millions of years of erosion have carved the thick volcanic deposits into the dramatic cliffs, pinnacles, and spires that characterize Leslie Gulch today. Sparse sagebrush and high-desert vegetation emphasize the remote character of this remarkable geological landscape.
