Built by Robert Stephenson, it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1849. The bridge has two decks carried on six cast iron arch spans, which are supported on stone masonry piers. The upper deck carries a railway and the lower a road. In the far distance, beyond the bridge, can be seen the multi-storey carpark featured in the Michael Caine film "Get Carter".
