This section of the New Town in Edinburgh was designed in 1801-2 by Robert Reid and William Sibbald. Heriot Row was designed by Reid with later modifications by Thomas Bonnar. The house at the far left of this picture is number 17 where the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 to 1894) spent his childhood from the age of 7 (from 1857). Stevenson wrote such classics as "Treasure Island", "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" and "A Child's Garden of Verses".
