As with mostfruits, drainage is es-sential, and rarely willgrape-vines thrive andproduce where waterstands for any lengthof time. Newly planted vinesshould be mulchedheavily with strawymanure for a space ofabout 2 feet aroundthe roots. Add what-ever commercial ferti-lizer the vines maylack, as indicated inthe chapter on feedingplants. For the firstseason the canes maybe tied to stakes or al-lowed to run on theground ; after that theyshould be trained ontrellises..
