East Lancashire Railway partying like its 1949. The award-winning 1940s weekend returns for the 16th time with afternoon dances set to 40s swing, vintage and retro fairs, ENSA entertainers, period vehicle displays, battle re-enactments, and a military parade. Organisers of the three-day 1940s Wartime Weekend have imposed strict new policies prohibiting Nazi regalia following an outcry over their use at previous festivals. Bosses banned participants from wearing German officer uniforms, swastikas and the Tokenkoph (death’s head symbol), on East Lancs Railway Property, following meetings with police and members of the Jewish community. As a consequence the format of the event has changed somewhat, and it is now more of a commemoration event rather than a ‘War Time’ re-enactment.
