Gateway of the New Gaol built 1836-1847 in the most cruel times of convict settlement. Troublesome prisoners from the Prisoners Barracks were committed here into a system meant to reform by isolation. The separate cells included included twelve that let in no light or sound and turned the occupants insane. Norfolk Island, Southwest Pacific, Australia
