Gachapon vending machines in the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka. Capsule toys are popular with children and teenagers. The balls contain plastic toys, collectible figures or small pendants. This is referred to as the gachapon and blind box economy: every month, thousands of vending machines offer new, inexpensive mini plush toys (200–500 yen) that are specially designed to fit in pockets. Collecting and swapping creates an addictive cycle and lowers the barrier to entry. Three young women and a couple stand in front of vending machines in the Umeda Sky Building.
