Founded in 1132 AD, Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian monasteries in England. Situated in North Yorkshire, next to the River Skell, 3 miles from Ripon, it became one of the wealthiest monasteries in its 407 years of operation. It was dissolved in 1532 under the reign of Henry VIII. The abbey is a Grade I listed building owned by the National Trust and part of the designated Studley Royal Park including the Ruins of Fountains Abbey UNESCO World Heritage Site.
