More information:

Before this statue was erected the English civil war resulted in Charles 1st's execution. Parliament sod the statue for scrap but the metal merchant did not melt it down as instructed- he kept it in his garden. When the monarchy was restored and Charles 2nd came to the throne, he had the statue erected in its current location in 1675. The statue occupies the site of the original Charing Cross, a monument which occupied the position until 1647. This location is traditionally the spot from which all distances to London are measured.
