A dvarapala, otherwise known as a dvarapalaka, is a gate or door guardian commonly found in Buddhist, Hindu and Jainist cultures. It is often portrayed as a grotesque, fearsome giant, usually armed with a weapon – the most common being a type of mace known as a gada.
