Dr Thomas Shaw in his study, the first of the genuinely learned scholars to spend much time in Barbary. Shaw was chaplain in Tangier and travelled widely in Tunisia and Algeria during the 1720's. He was later principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford and Professor of Greek at the university until his death in 1751.
