Christ the Redeemer: against a background of golden tesserae, a young and beardless Jesus, flanked by archangels and seated on a vivid blue globe, holds a scroll with seven seals in one hand and a triumphal crown in the other, in this detail of the superb Byzantine mosaic filling the apse dome of the 6th century AD Basilica di San Vitale at Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The mosaic dates from within a few years of Byzantium’s capture of Ravenna from the Ostrogoths in 540 AD. The city is now Western Europe’s greatest centre for the study of Byzantine art and architecture.

Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy: against a background of golden tesserae, a young and beardless Christ, flanked by archangels and seated on a vivid blue globe, holds a scroll with seven seals in his left hand and the triumphal crown in his right hand, in this detail of the Christ the Redeemer Byzantine mosaic filling the apse dome of the 6th century AD Basilica of San Vitale. This mosaic was created within a few years of Byzantium’s capture of Ravenna from the Ostrogoths in 540 AD. The ancient city on Italy’s northern Adriatic coast had previously served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Its Byzantine rule lasted into the 8th century, when it became the capital of the Lombard kings. Ravenna is now renowned as Western Europe’s greatest centre for the study of Byzantine art and architecture and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. D0695.A8311
