Chalkwell, Southend on Sea, Essex, UK. 9th Dec, 2021. A steam train has left Southend on Sea heading to Oxford for their Christmas Market and carol service, passing alongside the Thames at Chalkwell. The Steam Dreams organised special train is being hauled by ex British Rail LMS Stanier Black Five steam locomotive number 44871, which was built in 1945 and one of the last to operate passenger services before the removal of steam from Britain’s railways in 1968. A 1960s vintage Class 47 diesel is positioned at the back of the train as safety backup, as people watch from Gypsy Bridge
