Bunches of ripe dates ready for harvest hang from the tops of tall date palm trees in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs in Southern California, USA. Growing here are Thoory dates, also known as "bread dates" because they are drier and chewier than other varieties. Date palms were brought to the area in the 1890s, and this desert valley now provides 90 percent of the world's crop of dates. A few of the 350 date growers in the Coachella Valley have opened their date farms to visitors for tours and tastings of the delicious fruit.
