British army infantry (1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment) near Bailleul, France during the Battle of the Lys (Fourth Battle of Ypres) April 1918 in which the Germans pushed back the British to the Channel ports. French reinforcements that arrived later that month put an end to the German offensive. Over half a million men was killed during April 1918. See description for more information.

RM2F2CFRB–WWI - A wartime snapshot of men of the British Cyclist Corps negotiating snow covered French roads behind the lines in 1916. Volunteer cyclist units were formed as early the 1880s, with the 26th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers( the first complete bicycle unit) being formed in 1888. The Haldane reforms in 1908 reorganised the volunteers into the Territorial Force, nine battalions of cyclists were formed and others followed. By the First World War the Territorial Force had a strength of fourteen cyclist battalions. All corps were disbanded by 1922 or converted to normal units.

RM2B027JD–The fall of Mandalay on 20th March 1945 was the culmination of an advance of 640 kilometres (400 miles) against ever increasing opposition which carried the 19th Indian Division of the British Indian Army from the banks of the Chindwin River to the walls of Fort Dufferin in Mandalay.
