Catalonia’s independence referendum

One of the most prominent and recurring headlines throughout October has been the fight for Catalan independence. On 1st October, 90% of people voted for independence in the referendum, but the vote resulted in marches, protests and accusations of rebellion against the Spanish government.

The 2017 Nobel Prizes are announced

From 2nd – 9th October, the winners of the 2017 Nobel Prizes were announced. The six prizes awarded were:

  1. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
  2. The Nobel Prize in Physics
  3. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry
  4. The Nobel Prize in Literature
  5. The Nobel Peace Prize
  6. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel

The funeral of King Bhumibol Adulyadej

The five-day funeral of Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej took place from 25th – 29th October. On the fifth and final day of the funeral ceremony, the late King’s remains were brought to their final resting place. King Bhumibol died on 13th October 2016 at the age of 88, and was the longest reigning monarch having spent seven decades on the throne!

Storm Ophelia causes devastation

On 16th October, Hurricane Ophelia completed an extratropical transition and became the second storm of the windstorm season to hit the UK and Ireland. Storm Ophelia caused five deaths in Ireland, left 50,000 houses without power and gusts of up to 115km/h caused damage.  The storm also brought Saharan dust to parts of the UK, giving the sky a yellow-orange appearance.

Lewis Hamilton wins his fourth world championship

On the 29th October Lewis Hamilton clinched his fourth world championship at the Mexican Grand Prix, despite finishing 9th in the race that day. Hamilton joins Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost who have both won four titles, with only Juan Manuel Fangio ahead of him on five, and record-holder Michael Schumacher with seven world titles under his belt!
