Bamboo 'trees' beside a country hillside road, Jamaica, 1970. Although bamboo is technically a 'grass', the larger ones are very tree-like in appearance and can grow in height up to 40 metres. Bamboo is a very light building material yet is three times stronger that timber and has a greater tensile strength than steel. A sustainable crop, taking approx 3 years to mature, compared to the 30-40 years for a tree, it is a viable eco-friendly alternative to plastic, but when grown commerically needs to managed well, otherwise it becomes invasive.
