Ny Alesund is the world's most northerly inhabited settlement at latitude 78.55N. The locomotive is No 2, a 900mm gauge Borsig 0-4-0T, built in 1909. It was delivered to Ny Alesund in 1917 to haul trucks from local coal mines, which closed in 1963. Since this image was taken the locomotive has been restored.
