Alleghenny spurge (Pachysandra procumbens) blossoms. The male, or staminate, flowers are white, with the pollen-bearing anthers on the tips, while the female, or pistillate, flowers are inconspicuous and located at the bottom of the flower stem. This pachysandra is native to the southeastern U.S. and is preferred by gardeners who are reluctant to plant the highly invasive alien pachysandra from Asia. The dark green leaves shown here are holdovers from the past season, while the bright green growth at the bottom of the image is new foliage beginning in early spring.
