'A Rake's Progress', 1735; plate I of VIII. Tom Rakewell is taking possession of his miserly father's effects. Kneeling beside him is a tailor measuring him up for a new set of clothes, whilst the rake tries to buy off Sarah Young, who stands by the door crying and holding a wedding ring, with her angry mother next to her.
