A medieval wedding procession. Elizabethan wedding customs dictated that the woman had very little say over who her husband might be, indeed many couples met for the very first time on their wedding day. Marriages were arranged so that both families would benefit and bring prestige or wealth to the family. During the Elizabethan era of history women were very much 'second class citizens' and regardless of their social standing they were expected to marry.
