A Googol, illustration. A googol is 10 raised to the power of 100, that is 1 followed by 100 zeros. It has been estimated that this is a greater number (in some estimates, vastly greater) than that of elementary particles in the observable universe. It was invented by the American mathematician Edward Kasner as an example of an unimaginably large number, introduced in his 1940 book 'Mathematics and the Imagination' which also introduced the googleplex (10 raised to the power of a google).
