Returning home from school, eight year old Willie Bishop entered his home at Central park Estate, Rainham, Essex, to find his mother, taken suddenly ill, and having fallen into the fire. Displaying great presence of mind for a boy of his age he dragged her away, smothered the flames with a rug and called neighbours to his assistance. The mother, Mrs Eleanor louisa Bishiop aged 43, died in hospital. 3 May 1938
