1960s, historical, outside on a garden path, a little girl playing with a hula hoop, a toy hoop that she is twirling around her waist, Germany. Although a hoop had been in existence and used by children for hundreds of years - but not known by that name - it was only in the late 1950s, when the plastic version was introduced, that the craze for them took off. The hula hoop - the name coming it is said from doing the Hula, the dance in Hawaii - became a world-wide fad, with more than 100 million sold in two years. Hula hoops remained a popular children's toy until the late 1970s, early 80s.
