lumbar spine x-ray of a 30 year old male who underwent surgical spinal fusion
Description lumbar spine x-ray of a 30 year old male who underwent surgical spinal fusion between lumbar vertebrae 3 and 4, as well as lumbar vertebrae 4 and 5. The metal threaded objects seen on the x-ray are interbody fusion devices. These are titanium, threaded cages about an inch in length. Interbody fusion devices such as these are used in conjunction with bone autografts or allografts, functioning as internal splints, holding the vertebrae together while bone growth, remodeling and fusion occur. They can also be used to help restore height to ruptured, collapsed discs and thus relieve pain from pressure on pinched nerves.
