The Pope Leighey House of 1940 now in Alexandria Virginia is a superb example of Wright s Usonian type private residence commissioned as a family home Its remarkably simple and spacious interior is contained within a building of relatively modest scale The interior is distinguished by the fairfaced brick bearing walls built in benches and modular and moveable shelving Wright designed furnishings The sculptural designs of the simple ply furniture reiterate Wright s use of panelling as interior facing Living spaces were conceived for both comfort and flexibility and the patron Loren Pope helped in assembling the interior The house was given to the United States National Trust for Historic Preservation by its subsequent owner Mrs Robert Leighey in 1963 and has since been carefully disassembled and relocated to the Woodlawn Plantation where it was reconstructed |
