Description View of the museum at dusk The new gallery designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers was built in 2001 to house the collection It lies between the town hall and Gürzenich and is located in an area of the city historically associated with workshops painters and craftsmen The Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne was founded by a wealthy merchant Johann Heinrich Richartz 1795 1861 and is one of the great traditional art galleries in Germany Medieval paintings from the period between 1250 and 1550 and early modern art form the historic core of the museums collection together with the addition of a permanent loan of numerous Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings by the Swiss collector Gerard Corboud
