Description
|
you are now entering free derry gable wall painting at free derry corner in the bogside area of Derry Londonderry Northern Ireland . The wall was originally the gable wall of a house on Lecky Road . This spot was the focal point of many civil rights meetings and demonstrations and became known as free Derry Corner . The wall was originally painted in 1969 when local residents declared the area autonomous from northern ireland and british rule . It then became a no go area for British forces until Operation Motorman on 31st July 1972 when a massive British Army force overwhelmed the area to restore British Contol . It was a peaceful operation as the IRA withdrew to avoid bloodshed . There have been many attempts to demolish the wall including the British Army ramming it with an armoured vehicle . Later attempts by planners to remove the wall have been resisted by local people and it remains a memorial to this day . |
