B07BM7 - Licenced Caption Ruins from A920 road near Ellon Aberdeenshire of 16th century Esslemont Castle on site of 14th century earlier foundations Description A 16th century tower house, viewed from public higway, built on site of earlier 14th Century L shaped building by the Mareschal’s and then passed to the Cheynes of Straloch through marriage. Was destroyed during feud between the Cheynes and Hays in 1493 and later rebuilt. Later owned by Earls of Errol but lost during Reformation conflicts. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle.
