Scrap Lead in the environment
Description
It is not widely known but beneath the soil our farmland is littered with considerbly more lead than one might imagine. Lead is so easily worked,it has been used from at least Roman times to make things like spindle whorls, loom weights, and to pour into the crack/hole in a pot to repair it, known as a "pot mend" seen in the picture middle left. The two round objects with a hole in each, top right are a loom weight and a spindlewhorl (decorated). It is quite feasable for a metal detectorist to find as much as this on some fields,in one day ! Other post Roman items found:pilgrim badges, lead ampullas, musket balls, seals, coin weights, trade weights, tokens, toys. The list seems endless. |
