Description On the top of the West Cliff over looking the entrance to Whitby harbour. British navigator 1728-1779, born Marton, Yorkshire. Surveyed the St Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada. Sailed the Endeavour to Tahiti 1768-1771, circumnavigated New Zealand and then Antarctica between 1772 and 1775. Killed by natives at Owhyhee, Hawaii 1779.
