  1. How does Alamy Images prevent licence violations and unauthorised usages?

We take unauthorised usages very seriously. All our buyers are registered. To register they must agree to comply with our terms and conditions. Only registered buyers are given the ability to view prices and purchase images from our site. We keep detailed records of every client that has downloaded an image. For Licenced images intended use, media, territory and duration of use are recorded with each sale and this information will be used in the event of licence disputes.

  2. What if I already work with an agency?

Alamy’s agreement is non-exclusive but obviously you need to check your current agency agreement. If you need to block certain usages for the purposes of rights management we allow you to specify those usages as a restriction. This enables you to maintain the integrity of your image rights whilst exploring new sales opportunities with images that have a good selling history with other agencies. Obviously we are delighted to accept new work so that no restrictions are necessary.

  3. How will Alamy price my images?

Our licence calculator, which is based around common industry standards, calculates a licence price based on intended use, media, territory and duration. Royalty-free prices are related to the size of the image sold. All image prices are set by Alamy except for Royalty-free agencies who can set their own pricing, but use Alamy's file sizes. To view our online pricing simply register and log in. Many sales are made at the exact price you can see online, although Alamy do have agreed rates with some customers and will negotiate on sales if necessary.

  4. Can you tell me who has bought one of my images?

Unfortunately, we are unable to give out buyers information to contributors. There is an obvious need for Alamy to keep it's client list strictly confidential. Many publications also ask that we keep their details confidential, as they are not set up to handle requests for tearsheets, examples etc.

We have to find a balance between buyer confidentiality and a photographers desire to understand where their work is being used and that's why we divulge image usage information but not buyers details.

  5. Does Alamy provide the contributor with tearsheet examples of sales made?

Due to the high volume of sales and the inconsistent provision of tearsheets from customers we regret that we are unable to provide this service.

  6. What is Alamys policy on Credit lines displayed alongside purchased images?

Alamy requests that our editorial customers credit the Photographer or where applicable the Agency name/ Alamy Images. In reality we are unable to dictate the end result as many publications have their own policy, which may or may not have been influenced by the norm as established by other players in the picture industry. So whilst we strive to secure a credit (after all it's in our interests too of course) we cannot guarantee that one will appear or that the format will be as specified above.

  7. What do I do if a buyer gets in contact with me directly?

Alamy is designed to create more business for all its providers as well as itself, so we will pass on enquiries to you if we don't have the image that a customer is looking for. However we would always suggest that you supply us with that picture as a result of the enquiry so that we can ease your administration tasks on future sales. Please note that all sales resulting from searches on the Alamy site are subject to an Alamy commission of 10% and should be reported. Please understand that we are not a picture research facility and should not be advertised to your customers as such.

  8. Will Alamy link to my web site from Alamy?

No, the success of our business relies on us retaining the customer and making sales for you through our web site.
