RM2D4JRR3–Archive WW1 PASSCHENDAELE BATTLEFIELD AFTERMATH 12 October 1917 the 3rd Australian Division and the New Zealanders, assisted by the 4th Australian Division, were launched against the village of Passchendaele. Weather had turned the battlefield into mud. Artillery support weak; shells exploded harmlessly in the mud, neither cutting the enemy’s barbed wire nor silencing the guns. The New Zealanders fought across 2,300 metres of mud to be slaughtered by machine-guns. The Australians reached the edge of Passchendaele but, with mounting losses, were forced to withdraw. The attack was a disaster.

RM2EA8H63–What Tales They Could Tell. These old American Red Cross ambulances reached Serbia during the war, and were used in transporting wounded Serbian soldiers until they fell apart. Serbia was at war for seven years and during that time the roads were never repaired. It was terrific strain on motor cars. There are about twenty of these broken down ambulances piled together in a military area at Belgrade, and they really deserve better treatment, because they are real veterans of the great war. Shepard Jr., pilot of the Mercury-Redstone 3 (MR-3) suborbital spaceflight, is retrieved by a helicopter from the USS Lake Champlain during recovery operations in the western Atlantic Ocean. Although Spanish, particularly Catalan, iron working had reached a level of great artistry by the late Middle Ages, many ordinary household objects continued to be wrought in the traditional and less refined fashion, as is the case with this support for a spit (once part of a pair). It is amusing, however, and its maker demonstrated great inventiveness in transforming the scaly fins of its arched back into rings through which the spit could be inserted at gradual intervals.
