While other passengers visited the tourist sights, Savile made a macabre excursion to a Hindu crematorium and the Towers of Silence, where members of the Zoroastrian sect leave their dead in the open to be devoured by vultures and other predatory birds. The disc jockey and radio and TV personality was “Running around the world”, raising money for Stoke Mandeville and other charities.Savile, is at the centre of numerous allegations of child abuse. He died at the age of 84 on 29 October 2011 and was buried in Scarborough, where he had had a home for 40 years, a week later.The allegations he had abused children were first aired in an ITV documentary on 3 October.A senior Scotland Yard detective described Savile as a “predatory sex offender” who had a “predilection” for young girls.Photograph by: GLYN GENIN
