Nafplio town, Argolis Prefecture, Peloponnese, Greece, EuropeMore information:
Nafplio , is not just a perfect destination for romantic "escapes" from Athens, but also a town with great history and great architectonic importance. In the old part of the town you can see some great examples of Venetian architecture, some Islamic monuments from the Ottoman Era and some beautiful Neoclassical buildings. You can also see 3 beautiful castles , Bourtzi, Akronafplia and the magnificent Palamidi . Nafplio, was the first capital of Greece (before Athens), after the liberation of the country from the Ottoman empire. It is the town, where the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was murdered. Very close to Nafplio you can find many, very important archaeological sites, like Mycenae and Tiryns (World Heritage Sites by UNESCO), the Acropolis and the ancient theater of Argos (often referred as the most ancient city of the world still existing) and the world famous Ancient Theater of Epidavros.
