© Bildarchiv Monheim GmbHFlorian Monheim is the owner of Bildarchiv-Monheim. He studied Graphic Art in Braunschweig and Photo Design at the University for Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany. These two disciplines and being the son of an architect, influenced him and lead him to his passion; the photographic visualisation of classical architecture and its relationship with the environment. With a keen eye for detail, Monheim uses a big format camera to make the smallest detail visible. He reveals rarely noticed but distinctively beautiful details that can be found in carved stone, wood or other building material.
His technique emerged while he was a student, where he photographed interesting architectural projects like capturing historic changes to the use of buildings during the former Eastern-Block communist era. The collection includes pictures of Russian churches that were transformed into a variety of sacrilegious uses such as swimming pools, shops, a discotheque, and a conference centre for the communist party. He also released various publications during his studies, including a beautiful black & white photo book about small decayed village churches in the Eastern part of Germany
Having already established his own collection of distinctive architectural images, Monheim founded his own specialised photo library in 1995. He invited a handful of young photographers to include their work on historical parks and gardens as well as classical and modern architecture. The collection represents images of famous buildings designed by celebrated architects.
During the last 10 years Bildarchiv-Monheim has grown to be one of the leading libraries in the field of historical and modern architecture. Included are images of Unesco World Heritage sites in Europe, towns, churches, objects of art, houses, interiors, bridges, museums, parks, gardens, and landscapes. The collection covers images throughout history from the Stone Age, Roman Antique, Celtic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, 19th Century, Art Deco and Bauhaus style, right up to the contemporary architecture of the 21st century.
It is Monheim's aim to cover the art history of building all over Europe. With a constantly growing team of internationally renowned photographers Bildarchiv-Monheim presents excellent images of the art of architecture.
