Alamy Images scoops EMMA technical excellence award

Image portal beats the BBC and other leading companies to win prestigious award for website usability

12th December 2002

Alamy Images, a leading provider of both specialist shots and general stock photography from the world's major picture agencies and photographers, has won an award for its website in the annual International EMMA (Electronic Multimedia Awards) awards. The European-based EMMAs, now in their 11th year and amongst the most highly regarded interactive media awards worldwide, acknowledge best practice in the growing online industry. Alamy won the Usability category of the Technical Excellence award - newly introduced last year and only offered when tough standards have been met - in the face of stiff competition from several companies including the BBC, known for their longstanding multimedia expertise.

James West, CEO of Alamy commented "We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from our customers to the recent redesign of our website - which is one of the fastest and easiest to use in the business - so this industry accolade is the icing on the cake. This doesn't mean that we will become complacent; we are constantly revising our site in line with customer feedback and requirements and 2003 will see more technology innovations to ensure our service remains one of the best in the business."

Alamy Images was established in 2001 to provide more flexible commission packages to photographers and thereby a wider range of images for customers, as it attracts contributors who have not previously been able to afford to sell their work online.

About The EMMAs

The International EMMAs (Electronic Multimedia Awards) recognise excellence in digital media content creation through the acknowledgement of best practice and ongoing educational programmes. Celebrating their 11th anniversary this year, this European based international awards programme attracts entries from over 40 countries and has the widest reach of any digital awards event worldwide. The EMMAs are respected for their independence and impartiality and are widely recognised as the most prestigious interactive media awards. The EMMAs are organised in conjunction with an international steering committee comprising experts from all sectors of the industry and the sole objective of the competition is to reward excellence. In line with this policy, a single award is presented in each category, but only where the high standards that have become synonymous with the EMMA name have been achieved.
