Having got to grips with resizing images for Alamy posting from a Canon 10D on a PC I went & got a mac with Aperture 2 and the whole learning process starts again.

My source original on disk is 1.4mb. Creating an export version in Aperture 2 at 5200x5200 300dpi etc leaves my image file size unchanged, because the resize pixel setting is prefilled to 'within' the pixel parameters. My original of 3072x2048 is indeed 'within' 5200x5200, so isn't getting upscaled.

I see my alternative as setting the resize to a % of original, but this seems a bit of guesswork given that an image may have been cropped. I have just resized to 130% and also 200%, which exports to 6144x4096, but a file size of 3.4mb, which seems way short of the 18mb that I think I should be aiming for?

Any guidance gratefully received. And any ideas how to view the uncompressed file size in Aperture?

Thank you,

Michael

I dont know anything about Canons, but, I shoot raw files with a Nikon D3. I get 35mb high res jegs. When I shoot Raw, I get roughly a 24 mb raw file when it is exported it gets bigger. I use Lightroom and export at 420dip. I havent had any problems getting files accepted lately. I just bought the camera 2 weeks ago and all images have passed. For example image B23505 was shot in raw and exported in lightroom.

SORRY to clarify:
When I shoot Jpegs, i get the 35mb file and can res up in photoshop 118% or around there.
When I choose to shoot raws I get the 24 mb. Its just a matter of choice. I prefer Raws for studio and set up shots. For Grab shots, I shoot High jpegs.
B23505 was shot raw and converted
B1YB8E was shot highres jpeg and uprezed by increasing the dpi to get the file size needed.

Thanks for your thoughts, but you're using a Nikon with Lightroom - I'm using a Canon with Aperture 2, which is what I am asking for help on..!

Michael, I'm not sure why that isn't working for you, I shoot with a 12 M Pixel Sony A700 and use Aperture 2.1.

I am starting with a 4272 x 2840 master and then

Make an Export Preset for the version:

Fit within Pixels 5120 x 5120

ColorSync Profile AdobeRGB (1998)

JPEG Quality 10

(Don't forget for Alamy submission you also need to use NO sharpening).

The exported JPG then ends up 5120 x 3410

The only problem I have is if I have a thinner than 3:2 crop and then the file size can be slightly too small. Then I have to do something like export to fit within 5340 x 5340

Compressed file sizes are generally in 3 to 6 MB range depending on picture content and detail.

Apart from opening the compressed file in Photoshop to check the uncompressed filesize, you could work it out yourself:
e.g.
5120 x3410 x 3 (RGB) = 52377600 Bytes
Divide by 1024 to get Kilobytes = 51150 KB
Divide by 1024 to get Megabytes = 49.95 MB

[I once got caught out because I carelessly thought 52,377,600 bytes was 52.3MB]

One other thing I discovered about Aperture exporting:

I made an 'Alamy' export preset:

Image format JPG
Include metadata
Image Quality 10
Size to: Fit within (pixels)
Width 5120 Height 5120
DPI 300
Colorsync Adobe RGB (1998)

If I then export a file that is originally 4272 x 2840, I get the expected 5120 x 3404 upsized file.
HOWEVER:
If I have had to straighten my photo within Aperture to get horizon level for example and the photo is now 4176 x 2776 and export it with the same preset (Fit within 5120 pixels), I do NOT get a 5120 file, instead I only get a 5006 x 3328 file which is slightly under the 48MB file size.

I can't find any way to force the correct size apart from editing the preset and making it even larger on an individual basis.

Thanks BCS - I have persevered with this and your comments are useful. I created that preset and my resulting images are reaching the required file size with a 5200x5200 limit. I still struggle to get Aperture to show me the uncompressed file size, but I'm sure it's in the metadata somewhere..! In the meantime Alamy are accepting my images so I shall be grateful for success and move on to other items in Aperture!

Sorry BCS, I've reread your post & the wxhx3 /1024/1024 is very useful. Also explains as you noted, why a cropped image can fail on the file size.

It is very tempting not to sharpen before submitting to Alamy...

Thanks (David?), I will load that up and use it for my next submission. Usefully however, Alamy fail individually for file size on the online upload without binning the entire submission.

I would still rather check it before, so thank you.

On a slightly different topic, any idea how to insert a text hyperlink in an Aperture created webpage? I want to link to my pages on Alamy direct from curlymop.co.uk but can't find how. I have dreamweaver on the PC which I can use pretty well, but I'd rather stick with the template from Aperture on the mac for now.

Thanks

Michael
