Photography competitions to enter

Is it just us, or has this year already flown by? Before we know it, it’s gonna be *whispered tones* Christmas. I’ve been taking a look at some cool photography competitions to enter before 2017 actually comes to an end, so hopefully you can start your 2018 on a high note.

Photo Contest Insider has a great database of competitions that’s worth checking out. You can also subscribe to email updates, so that the latest and greatest competitions are sent directly to your inbox.

You’ve got to be in it to win it!

If you’re attending the PhotoPlus Expo (come and say hello to our Contributor Relations team at booth 963), they have 2 competitions to enter. Their Perspectives competition is celebrating the human experience, and has a variety of categories to submit your images to. For any portrait photographers, their Faces competition might be one for you.

The Neutral Density Magazine’s annual awards deadline is September 24th. There are a wealth of categories to choose from, so head on over and check them out, then rifle through your collection to see if you’ve got any winners in your archives.

Fine Art Photography have an early bird deadline of October 15th for their Fine Art Photograph Award. The official closing date isn’t till February, but you know what they say about the early bird. With industry professionals from all over the world judging the images, this Fine Art competition is definitely one to look into.

If you fancy your chances at winning a nice new Fujifilm camera, the Black + White Photographer of the Year competition is for you. With 3 broad categories to choose from, you’ll have plenty of scope to select your images from before October 30th.

In contrast, the Chromatic Photography Awards are running the International Color Photography Contest. The deadline is the 5th of November (remember, remember). It’s the first edition of this competition, so it’s a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

The final date to enter the International Photographer of the Year competition is December 10th. With different categories for both Professionals and Amateurs, there’s bound to be something to fit your niche, and with a chance to win up to $2,500, it’s well worth a look-see.

Check those Ts & Cs…

As with any competition, you should always read the rules and terms & conditions before entering. The most important things to look out for are;

  • People & Property – If your images contain any unreleased people or third party property, it may not be allowed to be entered into certain competitions
  • Date – Does the photo have to have been taken during a certain period of time?
  • Location & Age – Make sure you are eligible to enter before sending over any money or photos
  • Fees – Does it cost to enter? Is it an amount that seems reasonable?
  • How will they use the images you send? Most will want to use the images in line with promoting their competition. Are you comfortable with this?
  • Rights grabs. By entering, make sure you aren’t giving them an RF license in perpetuity

If you’ve had any luck with other competitions, let us know in the comments.

    Isn’t this one of the commonest reasons for running competitions, to get fresh free content?
