Allow me to introduce myself. My name is James Hall and I am the new Head of News at Alamy. I am delighted to have been appointed to help transform Alamy’s news picture operation.
I have been in newspapers for my entire working career, most recently as the news editor on The Sunday Telegraph. Before that, I worked as the news editor at The Scotsman and before that as foreign editor on the same paper. I have a wealth of experience in building up strong news teams and am excited about the prospect of working with those of you who are either already news, sport or entertainment photographers or who want to take these kinds of images in the future.
As traditional large media organisations continue to struggle with the pace of change, I believe that Alamy can thrive. We already work with thousands of top photographers and agencies around the world and we sell to hundreds of media outlets. We now have a vision of how we can use these two great assets to create a new kind of news picture operation. We have a good idea of where we want to get to, and how to get there.
One of the first things we have decided to do is to shut down public access to our Find a Photographer website. We have found that the service is not being used as much as we would wish and that we need to change our strategy for getting the world to know about our great team of contributors.
From now on, we will be taking a more proactive role in promoting our contributor team to the world’s media organisations. We want picture desks and advertising agencies to contact Alamy directly so that our staff can help them to find a contributor who meets their needs.
Alamy believes that through more careful management of the Find a Photographer service we will be able to improve it for contributors and customers alike.
So what does it mean for you?
For those contributors already on Find a Photographer, we suggest you do nothing. Our changes are designed to increase the number of commissions for our contributors.
For those not on Find a Photographer who would like to join, the process remains the same as it did before. Alamy will invite you once you’ve made at least 10 sales from 100 images+ online. We may change this as our strategy evolves.
This is just the first in a series of changes we will be implementing to improve Alamy’s news product. I will try to give you as much information as I can along the way. I would also like to hear from you about your ideas. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know what you think we should be doing.
Speak with you soon.
