We will shortly be making some changes to the way in which search results are displayed.
When a search is conducted, our search engine will display one thumbnail from each upload (i.e. per media reference) with relevant images.
The 'more' link which appears under a thumbnail will include ALL of the other images under that pseudonym that contain the keyword or words that have been searched for and that were uploaded at the same time, i.e. they will have the same media reference number.
When a user hovers over the 'more' link they will see all of the thumbnails that live below, displayed in a grid.
You are not able to choose the image that appears, with so many different searches returning so many different results sets this isn't feasible. To illustrate this, consider the image featured on this blog, it may be the contributors best image for 'shuffle' but not for 'glass'.
The image that is displayed first is based on relevancy of keywords.
Guidance as ever to contributors is to keyword accurately, paying attention to the weighting of the different keyword fields and edit carefully. With high quality images and relevant keywording you shouldn't have to worry which ones appear at the 'top' of your pile.
The sort order of results will still work on the same principles, being largely driven by AlamyRank and relevancy.
This enhancement to the 'more' option is in response to customers feedback about too many similars appearing on the initial search results page. We also felt we were denying all of our contributors a fair crack of the whip as some were dominating the early pages of results.
We are not seeking to provide a definitive 'similars' feature with this new initiative, although this is very often a by-product of this approach.
