We use the Novel Use collection when we are entering into deals that require a high degree of flexibility and are usually a departure from our core business. However, sometimes we may also work with familiar customers but in new and different ways as their businesses evolve.
If this all sounds very vague, I'm afraid that is intentional because the entire scope for Novel Use sales is impossible to define. New revenue opportunities present themselves as emerging businesses find a need for imagery and as technology continues to develop.
Our previous communications on Novel Use include the line below; your reaction to which should be the key driver behind your decision to sign up or not.
If you sign up to the Novel Use scheme you are giving Alamy permission to sell your images at any price and by any method we feel is appropriate.
We appreciate that this may not suit everyone; hence we made this scheme optional from the outset. Once signed up, your images remain in the Novel Use pool, with a yearly window in April when you can opt out if you've changed your mind. This is to allow us to market a collection that will remain stable.
The opportunities we have pursued thus far, have been wide ranging with equally varied price points. It may mean your images will sell through certain Novel Use projects for very low prices (less than $1) whilst other Novel Use projects may have prices that are indistinguishable from regular Alamy sales.
Novel Use revenue is revenue that we wouldn't get without us having the Novel Use collection and its associated level of flexibility. We are not using Novel Use to either establish a microstock business or to cannibalise our core business.
The nature of some of the deals we have in place means that the reporting of sales may be delayed. For example, we have worked with one customer who reports every 12 months and the price per image is determined by how many images they have used. We appreciate that this delayed reporting can be frustrating but it is only the reporting that is delayed. We only allow Novel Use customers to buy images from a pool of images that at the time of purchase are signed up to the Novel Use scheme.
I've listed below a few examples of current or potential deals we are working on. This is to give you all a feel for the sorts of deals we are doing but is not a definitive list:
- Canvas/Poster prints for home use
- Internal corporate use
- On-campus academic use
- Images for display on social networking sites
- Self publishing: Novels, autobiographies etc
- Plug-in use: e.g. partnering with blogging software companies so that users can embed images into their blogs
- Wallpaper: Using images for printing onto individuals' walls
- Consumer goods: Making images available for one off prints onto mugs, bags, t-shirts etc
We've shared some Novel Use success stories including the CCC project and our partnership with
mySomeday.
We are keen to be as transparent as possible and are considering ways in which we can give you greater information about how the images are used whilst still protecting our business and working in a practical manner. If you sign up to Novel Use you must be comfortable that your images can be used with total flexibility regarding how they are used and at what price point. If you are not comfortable with this, Novel Use is not for you. It isn't feasible to offer opt in on a case by case basis or determined by a price threshold, with Novel Use you are either in or you are out.
If you are not sure whether you are signed up or not just visit 'Additional Revenue Opportunities' in 'My Alamy'.
