Since the introduction of 24MB files for submission to Alamy we have noticed a big reduction in the number of submissions that fail Quality Control (QC). However, we are still witnessing a high proportion of images failing as a result of unnecessary upsizing. We want to reduce this even further.

So, using this opportunity, we would like to offer a recommendation. Any contributors encountering problems with images failing QC for poor upsizing reasons (such as interpolation artifacts, soft due to size and soft or lacking definition) should submit images at their native file size or at 24MB.

Our recommended guidelines for file size are:

‘If necessary, interpolate (upsize) the file to 24MB using a specialist, professional software package. If you have a camera that is capable of producing an uncompressed 8 bit file size of over 24MB then leave it that size. We recommend Adobe Photoshop although other software is acceptable. If using Photoshop version 7 or higher select the bicubic option. We advise that you do not use “step” or incremental interpolation. Check your software’s default settings to ensure that all sharpening is turned off.’

More QC tips can be found on the contributor help pages.
