We will shortly be rolling out our News Feed Beta. It’s very important that if you are supplying images to this feed you follow some basic guidelines to help you, Alamy and our customers get the best out of the News Feed Beta.

Only images supplied through the Reportage/Archival Upload route and marked as ‘News’ (last 48hrs) will be included.

Current Limitations

The news feed itself is not searchable, images are displayed in groups allowing customers to browse through the submissions.

We do not have a date or categorization filter on the News Feed Beta.

How it works
  • Images submitted via the Reportage/Archival route and flagged as ‘News’ will be fast tracked through our image processing system.
  • The Feed will update every 10 minutes.
  • We extract Caption, Keyword and Date information from the IPTC information embedded in your image. If we do not have a date from the IPTC Date taken field we will take the date from the EXIF info from your camera that is also embedded in your image.
  • An IPTC caption is mandatory for the image to appear in the News Feed Beta.
  • We add default values of No for Model Release and No for Property Release.
  • We also add a default Licence type of L (Rights Managed).
  • We add a default pseudonym (the name that appears under the image) we will take this from the default you have set in your Alamy account. If you do not have a default we will use your full name as per your registration.
  • The News Feed Beta is ordered by the date images were uploaded.
  • Images that were submitted in the same upload session (they will have the same Media Reference) and have the same date taken are grouped together . The first image submitted is displayed as the ‘primary’ image and the other images are available ‘underneath’ once the customer clicks on the primary image.
  • The images are ‘on sale’ and can be purchased by our customers as soon as they appear on the news feed.
  • The images will not appear in ‘All of Alamy’ until you go into Manage Images 2.4 as usual and fill in the remaining required fields. Once you have done that the images will appear in all of Alamy within 24 hrs (or slightly longer if over the weekend).
Requirements
  • Only mark images as ‘News’ if they were shot in the last 48 hrs.
  • If you are submitting images that all cover the same story please include them in one upload session.
  • Do not mix images up from different stories in an upload session unless they have a different ‘ date taken’.
  • Think carefully about which image you submit first as this will be displayed as the primary image for that story.
  • Please ensure your EXIF information is up to date on your camera. Specifically make sure the Date is correct.
  • If you are adding IPTC data please again ensure that is correct.
Future features

This beta version is not the finished article but we wanted to show photographers and customers a feed of the images that are being submitted as soon as we could.

We are already working on a fully fledged news service that will be searchable, incorporate news features, an FTP upload and have a more streamlined upload process.

We are very interested to get your feedback and ideas for future enhancements and will be sending out an online questionnaire shortly.
