Looking back over the last year and following up on feedback received at our contributor event in November, we wanted to share some figures with you. In 2008 we made sales of $31.5M, of this we paid out a total of $20.8M* to our contributors.

If we analyze who’s making money on Alamy, the table below illustrates that divergent strategies do well on our site. We allow contributors the freedom to choose how many images they send and it’s clear there is no magic formula.

For example, within our top 10 photographers (based on earnings) we have two photographers whose approach couldn’t be more different. One photographer has fewer than 6,000 images and has an average sales return of $17 per image per year. Another photographer on the other hand has almost 60,000 images with a return of $2 per image per year. These two photographers are making similar amounts of money on Alamy, one has a large back catalogue of imagery and is adding to it all the time, the subject matter is wide and varied, the other has a tightly edited collection of iconic images.

We’ve split the figures into individual photographers and contributing picture agencies. We’ve also split the top 100 in each category based upon how many images they have. Revenue figures are gross sales values.
