Reflex Stock and Alamy

We wanted to respond to a number of queries raised on the forum with regards to Reflex Stock selling Alamy images. Reflex Stock are an appointed Alamy distributor for the territory of Ireland.

With the launch of Alamy on Reflex Stock some technical and operational aspects of our collaboration require our attention. We are currently working with Reflex to resolve these issues, this includes the watermarking of the images and the visibility of restrictions.

Reflex are contracted to proactively sell images in Ireland. We appreciate that they have a web site that is visible to UK customers, whilst the global aspect of a web site is largely unavoidable the presence of Alamy on this site is something we are currently discussing with Reflex.

We'd like to confirm that all keywords and caption data attached to your images are searchable by all our distributor sites but as with Alamy all the keywords are not displayed.

Fusion Photos is a sub section of the images on Reflex that they are promoting as a distinct group of images, this includes Alamy images.

We apologise for the problems that have been identified and we thank all contributors for their feedback, however, if you have an issue you want to raise with Alamy direct please email Member Services.

I appreciate that the Blog is not the place to raise issues about Reflex Stock and Alamy. May I suggest that contributors copy non-personal issue and question emails and responses onto the Alamy Forum (if considered appropriate) along with answers as I think we might all benefit from the knowledge.

In the meantime, thank you Alan for the start of the information process and distribution. I'm sure more will be forthcoming in the course of time.

    Please can Alamy clarify 'Ireland'
Is this 'Republic of Ireland' or 'Northern Ireland'?

    In your hands we rest...

The watermarks problem is not exclusive to Reflex Stock. Other Alamy distributors don't use them either.

    Does Reflex use stemming????????

  6. 13 August 2008 at 17:45 flying dog

Chris, what like stem research or a plant stem. Or is it to stem the flow of something.
Oh, I get you, like bugger or buggered ;-)

On some of the other distributor sites a buyer has to identify which country they are in and the list only covers the appropriate territory ie)a list of eastern european countries. With Reflex the list covers every country in the world. Similarly when proceeding to price an image exactly the same list appears as on the Alamy site. There needs to be a block on UK based buyers. If it is only permitted to sell in Ireland then that should be the only option available.

"We have assigned a UK based distributor as they have been specially selected for their proven ability to sell into this marketplace."

This is the reply I received from Member Services when I enquired about Reflex Stock. Which is correct UK or Ireland, remembering that Northern Ireland is in the UK.

I phoned up Reflex Stock and spoke to the very nice Sales Director. I asked her about their client base, and she told me that they sell to Advertising and Corporate clients, they give their customs a very hands on personal service. She went on to say that in the month long Alamy trial period, they had been very successful, that is why Alamy wanted to work with them.

She then went on to say that they would now be beginning to work more closely with publishing companies.

I didn’t ask how many publishing companies are based in Dungannon, or Belfast which is their nearest big city or indeed Northern Ireland UK. But if I were her, I would be on the phone and targeting large and very large English speaking publishing companies and offering very competitive deals. Wouldn’t you.
We need an opt out button facility, prices have and are falling through the floor already. This is potentially another disaster.

Responding to points 2 and 8 and to clarify, by Ireland we mean Southern Ireland (also known as Republic of Ireland or Eire).

    Thank you Alan.

The address given on Reflex Stock's web site is Moy, Dungannon which is Northern Ireland
    (according to Wikipedia)

And they are registered on Companies House as a Private Limited Company
    Country of Origin: United Kingdom

Doesn't this make them a UK distributor based in Northern Ireland?

does it really matter north or south ireland...for stock business purposes they are basically in the same geographic region and so close to england anyway. As if you could legitimately call them different geographic regions as a sub-distributor....ridiculous.
This is just a poorly planned out venture on alamy's part...yet again.
And if the 'edited' collection is of interest to this distributor why doesnt that ring some bells in alamy to do it themselves and save photogs another middle man cut.

Will Alamy enforce use of watermarks for all their distributors?

  14. 15 August 2008 at 13:07 Alan Capel

Watermarking is now on the Alamy images on Reflex Stock.

  15. 15 August 2008 at 15:55 Richard Baker

I haven't looked all through my Reflex/Fusion pictures but I'm not seeing watermarks on the ones I selected. Maybe they'll take a while to work through the Alamy list on their server.

  16. 16 August 2008 at 00:25 Gaspar Avila

... And I can see that your portuguese distributor (Fotobanco) is also using them now. That's good, thank you.

  17. 16 August 2008 at 09:09 Dutch distributor not watermarking

    The Dutch distributor http://www.imageselect.nl/
    is still not using watermarking...

  18. 16 August 2008 at 13:48 john fowler

    I'm confused:

If Reflex is selling in Ireland, how come their office is in N Ireland (UK)?

Is this another third party taking a cut off the top of my fees?

    How can I opt out?

  19. 18 August 2008 at 13:40 Sandra baker

I've looked up my images on ReflexStock and don't find any of my restrictions listed. I realize that by listing the images under "editorial" Reflex/Fusion presumably believe that that negates the possibilities of an image being used for anything other than editorial, but I've made some calculations for what should be impossible sales (commercial sales) and come up with prices. What's up? This really could pose some serious legal problems which nobody would welcome. It might be advisable that in very least that they indicate some “restrictions” were put on an image as Alamy have done.

I have been able to go through the whole process of buying an image
online from Reflexstock, I stopped only at the point of entering
    credit card details.
This was an image of ours of children with restrictions for sensitive
use. The usage I 'bought' it for was:
    Business Usage
    Personal
    Duration 3 years
    Territory Worldwide
    Product industry Sensitive Issues
    Industry details sexual products &
    manuals

At no time were the restrictions shown, or any license terms shown.I have even been able to select 'sensitive issues' for the usage. This SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE!
Alamy know there are problems they have not solved but until they are solved these images should not be available for sale on Reflexstock.

Moy locally referred to as "The
Moy" is in the United Kingdom of
    Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. So can I, also in Northern Ireland, set up a Paraguyan outlet please ?
