Watermarking is back!

Alamy have re-introduced watermarking on its comp images, this will tighten security at a time when the industry is seeing more and more small file sizes being used for a variety of uses. We feel the time is right to introduce a watermark which is non intrusive but provides an effective level of security. A select group of our key customers will not see the watermarks, all remaining visitors to Alamy will see watermarked images.

That is GREAT. I love the four thin lines, it adds more work for anyone who would try to remove the alamy name watermark, they will have to remove those 4 lines as well.

    Great news...
Sad though it is, image theft is rampant and it's naive to assume that the big companies don't do it too, whether deliberately or through sloppy processes.
Anything that can be done to ensure that those who want to use our images have to pay to do so is a GOOD THING!

We think the watermark intensity could be reduced abit and still be effective,

No changed mind after looking at more images I think its about right,

Watermarks have to be a step in the right direction. Great news.

Would just like to point out that after looking on 'Site map' and then at the page with the names of contributors, the images on those pages are NOT watermarked and could still be an acceptable downloaded image. You don't need to be logged in either!

I have yet to see a watermark!

I have searched on mine and other people's images. I have downloaded a comp (right click etc). All they have had is the black Alamy reference banner across the bottom. They are around 300 x 450 so usable up to about A5 size without too much bother.

All now becomes apparent!.. The watermarking was NOT introduced due to photographer pressure. Watermarking was introduced to protect the new 60p XL microstock sales... Sneaky!

Now, now David - merely coincidence, surely? Actually, the truth is more likely to be that Alamy have been considering inplementing the microstock option since at least January (look at the 'date' - the image count - on the graphic that accompanies the Limited Use item), but have had to wait until they sorted out their watermarking issues to safely launch it.
